Charm Tong and her colleagues advocate successfully for gender equity, freedom, and democracy in Burma, demonstrating through their programs that Burmese women can be self-sufficient and competent. In addition to being a founding member of SWAN, which cofounded the Women’s League of Burma, she and other refugee youth from Shan State started the School for Shan State Nationalities Youth (SSSNY) in 2001, to empower young men and women from Shan State who are current or future leaders in their community-based organizations. In the nine-month program they study social justice, democracy, HIV/AIDS education, English language, human rights, leadership, and advocacy.

As director of the school, Charm’s responsibilities include fund-raising, reviewing curriculum, and teaching. She is pleased with the school’s progress and the quality of the program and reports that students and staff alike have learned about group dynamics and team facilitation. On reflecting upon herself as a morally courageous leader, Charm Tong says her strength and dedication come from the collective work with other women, working as part of a larger group, within a larger movement. She says her identity is as a woman activist, an ethnic Shan, a Burma activist, and a fighter for justice.
